This guide provides an overview of how to join or leave the Committee on Korean Studies (CKS) Online Forum mailing list. Please note that the CKS Forum operates through Google Groups, so you must either have a Google-based email account or a Google Account (sans email) to join. Many .edu accounts are Google integrated. If you do not have a Google-compatible email, you will need to set up a Google Account.

Joining Using a Google-based account

Visit: https://groups.google.com/g/committee-korean-studies

Click:

A window will pop up asking you to confirm basic information, such as your email, how you would like your name displayed on posts, your interest in the group, and how you prefer to receive emails.

In this window, click on SUBSCRIPTION to indicate how often you want to receive messages from the CKS Online Forum.

Indicate below whether you want to receive e-mail updates to anything you post:

Indicate below your “Reason to join” by explaining your field, area of research, institutional affiliation, and/or interest in Korean studies.

Your request to join will be sent to the list moderators for review, after which your request will be approved or denied. The information submitted in the “reason for joining” box is not visible to anyone but mailing list moderators.

Note: Multiple Google Accounts

If you maintain multiple Google email accounts, it is possible that you may accidentally apply with the wrong account. To check which account you are currently using before you click “Apply to join group,” look to the upper right-hand corner of your screen. If you click the circle or rounded rectangle there (the shape may differ based on whether your email is a private one or one associated with an organization’s domain), you will be able to see which mail profile you are currently logged into. If you would prefer to join using a different email profile, first click the preferred profile from your list, then proceed with the steps above.

Changing your email account profile will cause a new tab to open, taking you back to the main Google Groups page, so you may have to or return via the URL:

https://groups.google.com/g/committee-korean-studies

Setting up a (non-email) Google Account

To create a Google account you can use on the mailing list without being forced to create an additional Gmail account, you can go to the following link:

https://accounts.google.com/signup/v2/createaccount?flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=SignUp&nogm=true

This should allow you to use your usual (non-Google) email to create an account profile capable of being used to join the mailing list. If you still encounter problems after attempting this method, please contact the CKS moderators by providing a brief statement of your interest in the group and your preferred email address.
